How it works

  • Absorbed dose is the energy imparted by ionizing radiation per kilogram of matter, and its SI unit is the gray (Gy). One gray equals one joule absorbed per kilogram of matter.
  • Enter a value and choose a unit to see the converted value for gray, milligray, microgray, rad, kilorad, and erg/g all at once in a table.
  • The rad is a once-widely-used CGS unit defined as 1 rad = 0.01 Gy, and erg/g represents one erg absorbed per gram, where 1 erg/g = 0.0001 Gy.
  • Absorbed dose (Gy) and the sievert (Sv) used for equivalent and effective dose are different quantities. The sievert applies weighting factors for radiation type and organ sensitivity and is used to assess the impact on the human body.
  • This tool only converts units of physical energy absorption and cannot convert to sieverts (Sv), because that requires a radiation weighting factor for each radiation type.
  • Results that are extremely large or small are shown in exponential notation; otherwise they are displayed with locale-aware digit grouping.
