How it works

  • Estimates the net bonus by deducting social insurance (health, pension, employment insurance) and withholding income tax from the gross bonus.
  • Health insurance uses the Japan-wide average employee share (about 5 percent); for ages 40 to 64 a nursing-care insurance portion (about 0.8 percent) is added.
  • Employees pension insurance uses an employee share of 9.15 percent and employment insurance an employee share of 0.6 percent.
  • Withholding income tax applies a simplified bonus withholding rate based on the previous month taxable salary and the number of dependents to the bonus minus social insurance, plus a 2.1 percent special reconstruction tax.
