How it works
- During childcare leave in Japan, health insurance and employees' pension premiums are waived for both the employee and the employer's share. This tool estimates the amount the employee no longer has to pay.
- Waived amount (monthly) = standard monthly remuneration × (health insurance rate + pension rate) for one month, multiplied by the number of exempt months. The bonus portion = exempt standard bonus × each rate.
- Enter the employee-share rates. The health insurance rate varies by health insurer and prefecture; the default is a rough 5.0% employee share (the total is roughly 10%, of which the employee pays about half). The employees' pension rate is 9.15% (half of the nationwide 18.3%).
- Even when premiums are waived, your insured status continues and you can still receive health insurance benefits. For pension, the period counts as paid, so your future pension is not reduced.
- Exempt months include any month where you are on childcare leave at month-end, plus any month in which you take 14 or more days of leave. Premiums on a bonus are waived only if your leave exceeds one month (rules effective from October 2022).
- Actual premiums depend on the remuneration/bonus grade and rounding to the yen, so they differ from this estimate. Confirm exact amounts with your health insurance society, the pension office, or your employer. This is a guide only.
