Cylinder Volume Calculator

Find the volume of a right circular cylinder from its radius and height (πr²h). Surface area, lateral area, base area and diameter are computed too.

Input

Enter the base radius and height to compute the volume (πr²h) and areas of a right circular cylinder.

Result

r = 3h = 8

Volume πr²h

226.194671

Lateral area 2πrh

150.796447

Surface area 2πr(r+h)

207.345115

Base area πr²

28.274334

Diameter 2r

Enter the radius and height in the same unit. Areas use squared units and the volume uses cubed units. Pi is taken as about 3.14159.

How it works

  • The volume equals the base area times the height. The base is a circle of radius r, so the base area is πr² and multiplying by the height h gives volume = πr²h.
  • The lateral (side) area is 2πrh. Unrolling the side of the cylinder gives a rectangle whose width is the base circumference 2πr and whose height is h.
  • The total surface area is the lateral area plus the two circular ends, 2πrh + 2πr² = 2πr(r + h).
  • Enter the radius and height in the same unit. If lengths are in centimeters, the volume is in cubic centimeters and the surface area in square centimeters.
  • The calculation uses approximately 3.14159 for pi.
