How it works

  • Enter a year and the tool calculates the date of Easter for that year. Easter is a movable feast defined as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, so it can fall anywhere between March 22 and April 25.
  • The Western Church (Catholic and Protestant) date is computed with the Gregorian Computus (Gauss algorithm) on the Gregorian calendar. The resulting Easter always falls on a Sunday.
  • The Eastern Orthodox Easter is calculated on the Julian calendar and then converted to the current Gregorian calendar for display. Depending on the year it may coincide with Western Easter or fall several weeks apart.
  • Related movable feasts anchored to Easter are shown as well, including Ash Wednesday (46 days before Easter), Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Ascension Day, and Pentecost (49 days after Easter).
  • The calculation assumes the Gregorian calendar reform and covers the range from 1583 to 4099. Historical feast dates may differ according to regional and church customs.
  • Because the Orthodox date is derived from the Julian calendar, note that in some years the same feast of Easter falls on a different date for the Western Church than for the Orthodox Church.
