Elliptic Cylinder Volume Calculator
Find the volume of an elliptic cylinder from its semi major axis, semi minor axis, and height. Base area, lateral area, and surface area are included.
Input
Enter the semi major axis a, semi minor axis b, and height h of an elliptic cylinder to compute its volume and surface area.
Result
Volume
150.796447
Base area
25.132741
Base perimeter
19.376896
Lateral area
116.261379
Surface area

Lengths use the same unit as the input. Areas are squared and the volume is cubed. The perimeter uses the Ramanujan approximation.
How it works
- The volume of an elliptic cylinder equals the area of its elliptical base times its height. The base area is pi a b, where a is the semi major axis and b is the semi minor axis, so the volume is pi a b h.
- The perimeter of the elliptical base has no simple closed form, so it is estimated with the Ramanujan approximation. The lateral area is this perimeter times the height.
- The total surface area is the sum of the two base areas and the lateral area.
- Keep all lengths in the same unit. Areas are in squared units and the volume is in cubed units.
- The semi major axis a must be greater than or equal to the semi minor axis b. When a equals b the shape is an ordinary circular cylinder.
