How Many Generations Ago Calculator
Find out roughly how many generations ago a given year or number of years was. Choose the length of a generation (about 25 to 30 years) and see an estimate of the number of direct ancestors in that generation.
Input
There is no strict definition for the length of a generation; about 25 to 30 years is commonly used as a rough guide. Results are approximate and will differ from any actual family tree.
Input method
Years per generation
Result
The year 1,900 was roughly
4generations ago
(1 generation = 30 yrs · precisely about 4.2 generations ago)
Years elapsed
126 yrs
Direct ancestors in that generation
16 people

Reference 2,026 / 30 yrs per gen
The number of direct ancestors is an estimate of 2 to the power of 4, assuming each generation doubles the number of parents (2 per person). In reality ancestors overlap (shared ancestry), so the true count is far lower.
How it works
- There is no strict definition for the length of a generation; about 25 to 30 years is commonly used as a rough guide. This tool divides the years elapsed by your chosen generation length to estimate the number of generations.
- When calculating from a starting year, enter the approximate year in which that ancestor lived. In elapsed-years mode you can specify 'how many years ago' directly.
- The reference year is usually the current year, but you can change it to any year to measure generations from a past point in time.
- The number of direct ancestors shown is an estimate based on '2 to the power of the number of generations', assuming the number of parents doubles each generation back.
- In reality, the further back you go the more shared common ancestors overlap, so the actual number of direct ancestors is considerably lower than the calculated value. Use it only as a rough estimate.
- The number of generations is shown large as a rounded integer, with the precise fractional value noted alongside.
