How it works

  • The Gregorian (Western) date is first converted to a Julian Day Number (JDN), and the Hebrew calendar year, month, and day are derived from it. Routing through the JDN keeps the offsets between the two calendars exact.
  • The Hebrew year is roughly the Gregorian year plus 3760, but because it rolls over at Rosh Hashanah (1 Tishrei) in the autumn, dates late in the Gregorian year may map to Gregorian year plus 3761.
  • The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar: a common year has 12 months, while a leap year (7 times every 19 years) adds Adar II after the sixth month for 13 months. This tool also reports the common-year or leap-year status.
  • Month names begin with Tishrei, followed by Heshvan, Kislev, Tevet, Shevat, Adar, Nisan, Iyar, Sivan, Tammuz, Av, and Elul. Heshvan and Kislev can be either 29 or 30 days depending on the year.
  • The year start is determined using an established algorithm based on the molad (average time of the new moon) and the postponement rules. Because a Hebrew day begins at sunset, holiday dates may appear shifted by one day when reckoned from sunset.
