Gregorian to Hijri (Islamic Calendar) Converter
Enter a Gregorian date to convert it into the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, with the month name and leap-year status shown.
Input
YYYY/MM/DD
Pick a Gregorian date and it is converted to the Hijri date using the arithmetic tabular method (11 leap years every 30 years). The result may differ by 1-2 days from calendars based on actual moon sighting.
Result
Enter a Gregorian date.
How it works
- Enter a Gregorian (Western) date and it is converted to the matching date in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar.
- The conversion runs through the Julian Day Number (JDN), and the Hijri side is computed with the arithmetic tabular method (11 leap years placed in each 30-year cycle).
- The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar based on the phases of the moon. A year lasts about 354 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so the same month drifts earlier through the seasons from year to year.
- It shows the month name in AH notation (Muharram, Ramadan, Dhu al-Hijjah and so on) and whether the year is a leap year.
- Because this uses the arithmetic method, the result may differ by 1-2 days from the actual Islamic calendar based on moon sighting. Always check local announcements for the exact dates of observances.
- AH stands for the Hijri era, counted from the Prophet Muhammad's migration to Medina in 622 CE as year one.
