How it works

  • HR/9 (home runs allowed per nine innings) shows how many home runs a pitcher gives up on average per nine innings pitched. A lower value means the pitcher is less prone to surrendering home runs.
  • The formula is home runs allowed x 9 / innings pitched. For example, allowing 15 home runs over 150 innings gives 15 x 9 / 150 = 0.90, or about 0.9 home runs per nine innings.
  • Innings pitched can include decimals. The common notations of one out (1/3 inning) and two outs (2/3 inning) are entered as roughly 0.33 and 0.67 respectively for a more accurate figure.
  • Following traditional convention, the result is displayed to two decimal places. Use it as a quick reference when comparing starters with relievers or season-to-season figures.
  • With very few innings pitched the value can swing widely, so comparing over a reasonable workload makes trends easier to read.
  • This tool gives an estimate based on the values you enter and may differ from official records or stats sites due to rounding and similar factors.
