How it works

  • Take-home = gross pension − social insurance − income tax − resident tax. Enter the gross annual amount of your public pension (national pension, employees' pension, etc.).
  • Taxable income (miscellaneous income) = pension − public pension deduction. The public pension deduction is at least 600,000 yen under age 65 and 1,100,000 yen at 65 or over, increasing with the pension amount (the quick formula used here assumes non-pension income of 10 million yen or less).
  • Income tax applies the progressive rates to (miscellaneous income − social insurance deduction − 480,000 yen basic deduction − dependent deductions), plus the 2.1% special reconstruction surtax. Resident tax is the income levy (taxable income × standard 10% rate) plus the per-capita levy (standard 5,000 yen), treated as exempt when total income is low enough.
  • Social insurance premiums (national health insurance, late-stage elderly medical, and long-term care) vary widely by region and age. If left blank, about 9% of the pension is estimated. Enter the amount if you know it.
  • Dependent spouse/relatives are estimated at a 380,000 yen deduction each for income tax and 330,000 yen each for resident tax (a guide for the general spousal and dependent deductions). It does not reflect specified or elderly dependents.
  • All figures are rough estimates only. Actual take-home varies by your medical insurer, municipality, deductions, and any non-pension income. Confirm exact amounts with the Japan Pension Service, your municipality, or a pension office.
