Enter a year.

How it works

  • Enter a year and the tool shows the Gregorian month and day of that year's Lunar New Year (the 1st day of the lunar 1st month), together with the weekday. Lunar New Year shifts each year, falling between late January and mid-February.
  • The Lunar New Year computed here is essentially the same date as the Spring Festival celebrated in China, Taiwan, Vietnam and beyond. It is one of East Asia's most important annual events, when families gather to welcome the new year.
  • The lunar calendar is a lunisolar calendar that combines the phases of the moon with the movement of the sun. This tool treats the month containing the winter solstice as the 11th lunar month and sets Lunar New Year as the new moon two months later, following the standard calendrical method.
  • Because the dates are derived from approximate astronomical formulas for the new moon and winter solstice, years in which the new moon falls near a date boundary may differ by about a day from the official calendar. Treat the result as a guide.
  • The tool also lists the Lunar New Year dates for the two years before and after the year you enter, so you can compare how the date shifts from year to year.
  • Each year's Chinese zodiac sign (the sexagenary cycle of heavenly stems and earthly branches) is shown as well. The sign is determined by the year and is often considered to switch around Lunar New Year.
