How it works
- This tool estimates your monthly take-home pay by subtracting social insurance (health insurance, pension, employment insurance, and optional long-term care insurance) and income tax plus residence tax from your gross monthly salary. It assumes a standard Japanese salaried employee.
- Social insurance is calculated by treating your monthly salary as the standard monthly remuneration: about 5.0% for health insurance, 9.15% for pension, and 0.6% for employment insurance (employee share), with caps applied to health insurance and pension. Actual rates vary by health insurance association, prefecture, and remuneration grade.
- Turning on "include long-term care insurance" adds the care insurance premium (about 0.8%) for employees aged 40 to 64.
- Income tax and residence tax assume the same salary for 12 months (no bonus): the annualized salary is reduced by the employment income deduction, basic deduction, and social insurance deduction to find the yearly tax, which is then divided by 12. Residence tax is approximated as a 10% income levy plus a flat per-capita levy.
- Use "other income deductions" to enter yearly deductions such as spousal, dependent, or life-insurance deductions. Leave it at 0 to apply only the basic deduction.
- Results are estimates only. Your actual take-home pay depends on your residence, age, dependents, deductions, bonuses, and company rules. Check your payslip or a tax office for exact figures.
