Pet Daily Water Intake Calculator
Estimate the daily water requirement of dogs and cats from their body weight. See the per-kg guide and how to factor in drinking water when feeding wet food.
Input
Estimate the rough amount of water your pet needs per day from its body weight. The actual requirement varies with body type, activity level, temperature, diet, and health, so the result is a reference value only. Consult your veterinarian about any concerns.

How to think about water from drinking and food
| Item | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Daily water requirement (total estimate) | 250 – 300 ml |
| Drinking water guide for a mostly dry-food diet | ~275 ml |
| Drinking water guide when also feeding wet food | ~165 ml |
When feeding wet food (about 70–80% water), much of the moisture comes from the meal, so less separate drinking water is needed to reach the target. The drinking-water figures above are rough approximations for convenience.
How it works
- Enter the species (dog or cat) and body weight (kg) to see the rough daily water requirement in milliliters.
- The calculation uses the common guideline of about 50–60 ml per kg of body weight per day, shown as a range and a midpoint.
- An amount close to the resting energy requirement (RER = 70 × weight^0.75) is also shown as a reference, roughly matching water needs to energy use.
- If you feed wet food (about 70–80% water), the pet also gets moisture from the meal, so less separate drinking water is needed to reach the target.
- Water needs vary widely with activity, temperature, season, age, health, and diet. The figures shown are estimates only.
- If you notice a sudden increase or decrease in water intake, or that your pet barely drinks, do not self-diagnose—consult your veterinarian.
