How it works
- Total gross bonus equals monthly base pay plus the regional allowance, multiplied by the payment months. The base amount adds the regional allowance rate on top of the monthly base pay.
- Annual payment months for the term allowance (kimatsu) and diligence allowance (kinben) total about 4.5 months for FY2024 (defaults: 2.45 plus 2.05), split roughly evenly between the summer and winter bonuses.
- Social insurance is estimated using the nationwide average health insurance rate of 5 percent (plus 0.8 percent long-term care for ages 40 to 64) and 9.15 percent employee pension, with the standard bonus caps applied. Actual mutual aid association rates differ.
- Withholding income tax uses a representative bonus tax rate derived from the monthly pay after social insurance, lightly adjusted by the number of dependents as an approximation.
- This is a rough guide using FY2024 (2024) figures. Actual amounts vary by employer, position, performance rate, local ordinance, age and dependents. Please confirm exact figures with your pay statement or payroll office.
