How it works
- Convert freely between tatami mats, square meters (m²), and tsubo. Enter a value and choose its unit to see every other unit at the same time in a results table.
- The area of a single tatami mat differs by region. Edoma (Kanto) is 1.5488 m² per mat, Chukyoma is 1.6562 m², Kyoma (Honma) is 1.824 m², and Danchima (public housing) is 1.445 m².
- All conversions are based on area in square meters. The value you enter is first converted to m², then divided by the chosen region's per-mat area to derive the number of tatami.
- Tsubo is the same nationwide regardless of region, treated as 1 tsubo = 2 tatami ≈ 3.305785 m² (400/121).
- The same '6 tatami' can mean different floor areas depending on the region. When comparing rentals or pre-owned properties, switch regions to check the actual area.
- Results are estimates. Real rooms vary with wall thickness, pillars, and storage, so confirm exact dimensions from floor plans or on-site measurement.
