Combined Work Rate Calculator
If A finishes a job alone in a days and B in b days, find how many days they need working together. Shows the daily work rate and the full solving steps.
Input
Enter how many days each person needs to finish the job alone. We compute how long it takes when they work together.
At least two people are required, and up to six can be added. Each day count must be greater than 0.
Result
Days to finish together
4days
Work done per day
0.25
Number of people
2
Share of work per day
A: 6 days alone, 0.166667 per day
B: 12 days alone, 0.083333 per day
How to solve it
Set the whole job to 1. Use each person days alone to find their daily work rate.
Add up the daily work rates. 1 divided by 6 + 1 divided by 12 gives a combined rate of 0.25 per day.
Divide the whole job 1 by the combined rate 0.25, giving 4 days to finish.
How it works
- Treat the whole job as 1. If a person finishes alone in d days, their daily work rate is 1 divided by d.
- When several people work at the same time, the daily work rate is the sum of the individual rates. For example, if A takes 6 days and B takes 12 days, the sum is one sixth plus one twelfth, which is one quarter.
- Divide the whole job 1 by the combined daily rate to get the days needed together. In the example, 1 divided by one quarter gives 4 days.
- Every day count you enter must be greater than 0. A rate cannot be formed from 0 or a negative value.
- The answer can be a fraction or a decimal. In word problems it is often natural to leave the answer as a fraction.
