Internal Radiation Dose Calculator (Inhalation)

Estimate the committed effective dose (mSv / µSv) from the becquerels and radionuclide of inhaled radioactive material, using ICRP reference inhalation dose coefficients.

Input

Enter the radionuclide and the activity (becquerels) of inhaled radioactive material to see an estimate of the committed effective dose. The dose coefficients are reference values for adult members of the public (ICRP Publication 119).

The committed effective dose is calculated as inhaled activity (Bq) × inhalation dose coefficient (Sv/Bq). Because the coefficient varies with particle size and chemical form, the values here are a guide assuming adult members of the public. For an actual exposure assessment, consult official sources or a qualified expert.

How it works

  • The committed effective dose (Sv) is calculated as "inhaled activity (Bq) × inhalation dose coefficient (Sv/Bq)". Results are also shown converted to mSv, µSv and Sv.
  • The dose coefficients are reference values from ICRP Publication 119 assuming adult members of the public. For inhalation, the value changes with particle size (AMAD 1 µm is assumed) and chemical form / absorption type, so the results are only a guide.
  • The committed effective dose is the total dose accumulated over a set period after a single intake of radioactive material into the body (50 years for adults).
  • Major radionuclides are included, such as iodine-131, cesium-137 and -134, strontium-90, plutonium-239 and americium-241. Note that the coefficient for the same nuclide differs from the one used for ingestion.
  • This tool gives an estimate only; an actual exposure assessment is affected by body size, age, intake conditions and other factors. For decisions about radiation, refer to official bodies and the guidance of qualified experts.
