Alcohol Calorie Calculator

Calculate the calories in beer, wine, sake, shochu and more from volume, ABV and carbs. Shows calories from alcohol and from carbohydrates separately.

Input

Estimate the calories in a drink from its volume, alcohol content and carbs. Carbohydrate amounts vary by product, so entering the value from the nutrition label gives a more accurate result.

How it works

  • Total calories are the sum of calories from alcohol and calories from carbohydrates. Alcohol calories = grams of pure alcohol x 7.1 kcal; carb calories = carbs (g) x 4 kcal.
  • Pure alcohol (g) is calculated as volume (ml) x ABV (%) / 100 x 0.8, where 0.8 is the density of ethanol. For example, a 350ml beer at 5% ABV contains about 14g of pure alcohol.
  • The preset volumes, ABV and carbs are typical reference values. Actual figures vary by product, so enter the values from the nutrition label when available for greater accuracy. Note that even drinks marketed as zero-sugar still contain calories from the alcohol itself.
  • Health guidelines often cite roughly 20g of pure alcohol per day as a moderate amount, and this tool shows your intake as a percentage of that 20g. This is only a general guide; an appropriate amount varies with body type, sex and age.
  • Sugary cocktails, sweet liqueurs and plum wine tend to have high carb-derived calories, while highballs and shochu or whisky with water have almost no carbs, so their calories come mainly from alcohol.
  • These figures are approximations based on standard coefficients and are not intended for medical or nutritional guidance. Drink in moderation and consult a doctor or other professional for health-related decisions.
