How it works

  • Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the amount of energy your body burns in a day just to stay alive at complete rest.
  • This tool uses the internationally recognized revised Harris-Benedict equation. For men: 13.397 × weight(kg) + 4.799 × height(cm) − 5.677 × age + 88.362. For women: 9.247 × weight(kg) + 3.098 × height(cm) − 4.33 × age + 447.593.
  • The "average for your age and sex" is a reference figure derived from the basal metabolic standard values and reference body weights in Japan's Dietary Reference Intakes (2020).
  • The calories you actually burn in a day (total daily energy expenditure) equal your BMR plus the energy used for physical activity. To include activity, use a TDEE calculator.
  • Note: results are estimates only. Your actual BMR may differ depending on body composition and individual factors.
