How it works

  • Pure alcohol (g) is calculated as 'volume (ml) × ABV (%) ÷ 100 × 0.8', where 0.8 is the density of ethanol (g/ml).
  • Cost per gram is 'price ÷ pure alcohol (g)'. The lower this figure, the cheaper the cost per unit of alcohol, so it is judged the better value.
  • The savings rate is calculated from the more expensive option as '(higher cost − lower cost) ÷ higher cost × 100', showing how much cheaper the better-value drink is.
  • By standardizing on pure alcohol content, drinks of different volume and strength can be compared fairly (e.g., a 350 ml can of beer vs. 700 ml of wine).
  • Enter a price and volume greater than 0, and an ABV between 0 and 100%. Discounts, loyalty points, and packaging differences are not taken into account.
  • This tool is only a rough guide to value. Please drink responsibly and avoid drinking too much. Prices and strengths vary by product, so check the label when buying.
