Hangover Prevention Drinking Calculator

Estimate how much alcohol your liver can break down from your weight, sex, and drinking time, and see a drinking amount that's less likely to leave a hangover. Includes guide amounts per drink type such as beer and sake.

Input

Estimates a drinking amount that's less likely to leave alcohol in your system the next morning, based on how much alcohol your liver can break down. Metabolism rates vary widely between individuals, so this is only a rough guide.

How it works

  • The amount of alcohol broken down per hour is estimated as body weight (kg) x 0.1 g. We assume metabolism continues over the total of your drinking time plus the hours from your last drink to morning or bedtime, then estimate a pure-alcohol amount less likely to cause a hangover.
  • Pure alcohol (g) is calculated as volume drunk (ml) x ABV (%) / 100 x 0.8 (the specific gravity of alcohol). The metabolizable pure alcohol is divided by the pure alcohol per glass of each drink to convert into a guide number of glasses per drink type.
  • To avoid leaving alcohol in your system by morning, the guide amount is set a little conservatively (about 90%) of the calculated metabolizable amount. The difference in body distribution factor by sex (commonly 0.7 for men and 0.6 for women in the Widmark formula) is also worth keeping in mind.
  • Health authorities generally cite about 20 g of pure alcohol per day as a moderate intake. If your result far exceeds this amount, be careful not to overdrink.
  • Alcohol metabolism varies greatly with constitution, physical condition, whether you are on an empty stomach, medication use, and more, so it may not follow the calculation. The figures shown are only a rough guide.
  • This tool provides estimates and is not medical advice. Avoid drinking if you are pregnant, taking medication, or underage, and consult a medical professional if you have any health concerns.
