Hidden Obesity Check

Spot "hidden obesity" — a normal BMI paired with a high body fat percentage. Just enter your height, weight, age and sex to estimate your body fat and check.

Input

Don't know your body fat percentage? Leave it blank — we'll estimate it from your height, weight, age and sex using the Deurenberg formula. If you have a reading from a body composition scale, enter it for a more accurate result.

Body fat % is estimated with the Deurenberg formula. Entering a measured value from a body composition scale improves accuracy.

How hidden obesity is judged

ConditionYour value
BMI under 25 (normal weight or below)21.5Yes
High body fat (over 20% for men)17.6%(No

If both conditions above are met, the result is "possible hidden obesity." The body fat thresholds used are over 20% for men and over 30% for women.

How it works

  • Hidden obesity (also called normal-weight obesity) describes a body fat percentage that is high even though BMI is in the normal range (under 25). The person may not look overweight but still carries excess fat. This tool reports "possible hidden obesity" when BMI is under 25 and body fat is high.
  • Body fat is treated as high above 20% for men and above 30% for women. When these thresholds are exceeded and BMI is at or below normal weight, the result shows as applicable.
  • If you leave body fat blank, it is estimated with the Deurenberg formula: body fat (%) = 1.2 × BMI + 0.23 × age − 10.8 × sex (men = 1, women = 0) − 5.4. Entering a measured value from a body composition scale gives a result closer to reality.
  • BMI is calculated as weight (kg) ÷ height (m) squared. A BMI of 25 or higher is treated as obese regardless of body fat, and below 18.5 is a guide for being underweight.
  • The formula and thresholds are general guides and may differ from reality depending on build, muscle mass and measurement method. Use the result as a reference for self-checking only.
  • This result is a guide only and is not a diagnosis or medical advice. Consult a doctor or registered dietitian about your health status or any weight-loss decisions.
