Housework Calorie Calculator

Pick your body weight, how long you worked, and the chore (cooking and dishwashing, vacuuming, general housework, or scrubbing floors and windows) to estimate the calories burned by housework. Reference equivalents in bowls of rice and body fat are shown too.

Input

Estimate the calories burned by housework from your body weight, how long you worked, and the type (intensity) of the chore. METs are representative values per activity, so treat the result as a guide.

How it works

  • Calories burned by housework are estimated with the common simplified formula 'METs x body weight (kg) x duration (hours) x 1.05'. Duration is entered in minutes and converted to hours internally.
  • METs (metabolic equivalents) express activity intensity relative to rest (1). Because intensity varies by chore, you can choose from cooking/dishwashing 3.0, vacuuming 3.3, general housework 3.5, and scrubbing/window cleaning 3.5.
  • The MET values are guides based on representative figures such as Japan's National Institute of Health and Nutrition compendium of physical activities; actual values vary with the size of movements and workload.
  • This formula estimates total expenditure including resting metabolism. To find net expenditure with the resting portion removed, some approaches use (METs - 1).
  • As reference conversions, one bowl of rice is treated as about 234 kcal and 1g of body fat as about 7.2 kcal to show 'bowls of rice' and 'grams of body fat'. These are approximate.
  • The calories shown vary by build, work intensity, and environment. Please use them as a guide only.
