Music Activity Calorie Calculator

Estimate the calories burned playing an instrument or doing music activities just by entering your weight, playing time, and playing style (intensity). It calculates by METs for seated playing, standing playing, drums, and marching band, and shows reference conversions into bowls of rice and body fat.

Input

Estimate the calories burned during instrument practice and music activities from your weight, playing time, and playing style (intensity). METs values are representative averages, so use the results as a rough guide.

How it works

  • Calories burned are estimated with the common simplified formula: METs × weight (kg) × playing time (hours) × 1.05. It is a rough guide that includes your resting metabolism.
  • METs express exercise intensity as a multiple of the resting rate. Because music activity intensity varies by playing style, you can choose seated playing 2.0, standing playing 2.5, drums 3.8, or marching band 4.0.
  • The METs values are guides based on representative figures such as those in the National Institute of Health and Nutrition's compendium of physical activity METs. Actual calories burned vary with the instrument, how vigorously you play, your build, and the temperature.
  • As reference conversions, results also show "bowls of rice" and "grams of body fat" assuming about 234 kcal per bowl of rice and about 7.2 kcal per gram of body fat. These conversions are only rough guides.
  • Playing does not directly reduce body fat by the same amount. Real weight loss depends on the overall balance of calories burned and consumed, including diet.
  • The displayed values are reference figures for health management. If you have health concerns or a medical condition, or plan to greatly increase your activity, consult a doctor or specialist.
