How it works
- Answer yes or no to questions about your smoking habits; the points are added up to gauge your likely level of nicotine dependence (low, moderate, or high) as a quick self-check.
- The questions are inspired by the spirit of screening tools such as the TDS and the Fagerstrom Test (FTND), but they are reworded in our own words rather than reproduced verbatim.
- Signs of dependence are scored, such as how soon after waking you want to smoke, difficulty cutting down, and past failed attempts to quit.
- A higher score suggests stronger physical and psychological dependence on nicotine. People who have smoked more cigarettes or for more years tend to score higher.
- The higher the dependence, the harder it is to quit alone. Smoking-cessation clinics and stop-smoking medications can be effective options.
- This tool is a simplified self-check, not a medical diagnosis or treatment. If you are concerned, please consult a medical institution or a smoking-cessation clinic.
