How it works

  • Enter the purchase amount, point reward rate (%), and cash discount rate (%), and the tool compares the net cost of each option, showing which is the better deal and by how much.
  • Point rewards are calculated as "purchase amount × point reward rate ÷ 100". Points are assumed to be fully spent on a future purchase at a value of 1 point = 1 unit of currency, so the net cost is evaluated as "purchase amount − points earned".
  • The cash discount is calculated as "purchase amount × cash discount rate ÷ 100", and the net cost becomes "purchase amount − discount". Unlike point rewards, the discount is applied at checkout, so the amount you actually pay is reduced on the spot.
  • At the same reward and discount rate the totals are equal, but a cash discount benefits you at the moment of payment, while points have no confirmed value until your next purchase. Considering the risk of expiration or unused balances, a cash discount tends to be the more reliable choice in practice.
  • Even when the point reward rate exceeds the cash discount rate, you may not realize the full face value if the points can only be used in limited places or expire quickly. Conversely, points for a store you shop at regularly can effectively be treated as good as cash.
  • This tool is a simple comparison that assumes points are used in full, and it does not account for point expiration, usage limits, campaign conditions, taxes, or fees. Use the result only as a rough guide and always check each service's terms before deciding.
