How it works

  • Skating calories are estimated with the common simple formula 'METs x weight (kg) x exercise time (hours) x 1.05'. Time is entered in minutes and converted to hours internally.
  • METs (metabolic equivalents) measure exercise intensity relative to rest (1). Higher METs mean higher intensity, so more calories are burned in the same amount of time.
  • The reference METs by intensity in this tool are general 7.0 and fast 9.0, approximations based on representative values such as the National Institute of Health and Nutrition's revised METs table for physical activity.
  • This formula gives a total energy estimate that includes resting metabolism. To find the net burn with the resting portion removed, some approaches use (METs - 1) instead.
  • As a reference conversion, one bowl of rice is treated as about 234 kcal and 1 g of body fat as about 7.2 kcal to show 'bowls of rice' and 'grams of body fat' equivalents. These are rough estimates only.
