Swimming Calorie Calculator

Just enter your weight, swim time, and stroke to estimate the calories burned while swimming. METs by intensity (freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and more) are applied automatically.

Input

Estimate calories burned from METs (exercise intensity). MET values are typical references, so actual energy use varies with your stroke and fitness.

How it works

  • Calories are estimated with the common simplified formula "METs × weight (kg) × time (hours) × 1.05". The 1.05 is a coefficient for converting energy per unit of body weight.
  • METs express exercise intensity as a multiple of your resting metabolic rate. This tool uses a representative MET value for each stroke (easy 6.0, breaststroke 5.3, moderate freestyle 8.3, fast freestyle 9.8, butterfly 13.8).
  • This formula gives total energy expenditure including resting metabolism. To see only the net increase from exercise you could use (METs − 1), but this tool favors simplicity and uses the common simplified formula.
  • For reference, results are also shown converted using about 234 kcal per bowl of rice and about 7.2 kcal per gram of body fat. These conversions are rough estimates only.
  • MET values and results are estimates based on standard reference figures; actual calories burned vary with swimming ability, form, water temperature, rest breaks, and other factors.
  • When using these figures for fitness or weight-loss planning, treat them as reference values and consult a professional if needed.
